DESCRIPTION: This tutorial shows you how you can make a beautiful frame for your portraits, et. cetera ... by using PI and different handy filters.

Remember to save often!

To make it more easy to select a border, right click/All, right click/Border and set the Pixels of the border for the Border width, Direction: Inward, Shape: Box. You can always use the Magic Wand Tool, but this way it's more easy if you use similar colors for the background and the border. (On the assumption that all sides have been expanded equally!)

Open the picture you want to use.
Go to Adjust/Expand Canvas/Expand sides equally 2 pixels, Expand: White, and select the border.
Go to Effect/Fills and Textures/Kaleidoscope Fill (in PI 8 the name is Artist Texture), click Edit (red arrow) and choose 008. Palette template 3 (1) and Pattern sample 5 (white arrow).
Deselect.

Expand sides equally 2 pixels, Expand: Foreground color (173/14/66 - white hand), which we pick from the picture.
Select the border and go to Photo/Noise/Add Noise/ Options: Varied + Variance: 15
Deselect.

Now we will make another golden frame - 2 Pixels - with the Effect/Fills and Textures/Kaleidoscope Fill. Use the same settings as we did for the first frame.
Deselect.

We are going to make several more frames like the 3 frames (also the same combination 1-2-1), so next time I'm only referring to the frames 1-2-1. Just repeat the steps we've done right now. And we will also need some more frames like the first one - the golden one. Then I will refer to frame 1.

Expand sides equally 5 pixels, Expand color: Foreground color. Select the border and go to Effect/Bordermania/ Frame #2: 5/5/110/121 + Notch Corners.
Deselect.

Add a frame 1 (2 pixels). Deselect.

Expand sides equally 25 pixels, Expand color: Foreground color. Select the border and go to Effect/Kang 4 (red arrow)/Batwave (white arrow). Use these settings (1):
192/115/45/27/96/34/125/103
Your screenshot might look different, since I'm using Filters Unlimited 2 - but the settings are the same anyway.
Click Apply and keep the border activated.

Photo/Color/Hue & Saturation: Colorize (red arrow): 156/0/-13.
You can see the original pattern (1), and the new pattern (2) in the Hue & Saturation window. (And you can also see the original pattern on the picture you are working on -  of course only if you haven't checked for the Preview.)

Go to Effect/Blur/Gaussian Blur Options and set the Radius to 2.

Go to Effect/Xero/Porcelain and use these settings:
255/103/127. (No matter which version of the filter you have - set all Channels to 0, and use the settings I wrote down, or others you like.)

Go to Effect/Bordermania/Frame #2 and use these settings: 19/19/130/55 + Notch corners.
Click OK and deselect the border.

Add a frame 1 and deselect.

Expand sides equally 40 pixels, Expand color: 139/29/46 (I used the eyedropper Tool to pick a nice color from the last multi-colored border.).
Select the border and go to Effect/Graphics Plus/Panel Stripes, and use these settings:
4/109/108.
Your screenshot might look different, since I'm using Filters Unlimited 2 - but the settings are the same anyway.
Click Apply and keep the border selected.

Go to Effect/Bordermania/Frame #2 and use these settings: 40/40/47/58  + Notch Corners.
Deselect.

Add a frame 1.

Merge All and Save As.

That's it! A beautiful, special frame for a wonderful portrait ... done with PI and different filters. If you want you can put some corners to the frame. That will make your framed picture even more outstanding. HAVE FUN!!!
